Berkeley Lab In the News, Week of August 24, 2014

An August 29 Los Angeles Times story on a new report on fracking in California noted that Berkeley Lab researchers helped lead the effort. EE News and several other outlets also covered the new report.

An August 28 Tech Times story highlighted comparative research into the genomes of flies, worms and humans and quoted the Lab’s Sue Celniker, a study co-author. Wall StreetOTC and several other outlets also covered the findings.

An August 28 R&D.com story featured cool roofs research in China led by the Lab’s Ronnen Levinson.

An August 27 Scientific American story featured research on ionic liquids led by the Lab’s Seema Singh and Blake Simmons.

An August 26 Daily Cal looked at a new multi-lab collaboration to study climate change and quoted the Lab’s Bill Collins. R&D magazine also ran a story.

An August 26 National Geographic story on data energy waste quoted the Lab’s Bill Tschudi.

An August 26 Nanowerk story featured work on a promising new material that may challenge graphene and quoted the study’s author, Feng Wang. R&D magazine and Azom.com also covered his research.

An August 25 Physics World story on research into the conductance of single-molecule junctions quoted Zhenfei Liu, who works in the lab of Jeff Neaton.

Berkeley Lab In the News, Week of August 17, 2014

An August 22 Live Science story highlighted work co-led by the Lab’s Oliver Gessner which helps give a better understanding of quantum vortices within liquid helium.

An August 22 story on The Energy Collective covered a new Lab-led report on wind power and quoted the Lab’s Ryan Wiser. CleanEnergy and FierceEnergy were some of the other outlets that also covered the report’s release.

An August 21 story in The Ecologist featured a recent report on fracking led by the Lab’s William Stringfellow.

An August 21 story in Today’s Facility Manager noted that the Lab’s Environmental Energy Technologies Division had won a Champion of Energy Award from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy.

An August 19 San Francisco Chronicle story on the origins of meteorites quoted the Lab’s Kunihiko Nishiizumi.

An August 19 Contra Costa Times story looked at a new multi-lab effort to model climate change. HPC Wire and FCW.com also covered the announcement.

An August 18 KGO-TV Channel 7 story highlighted work at the Molecular Foundry and Advanced Light Source to improve computer chips. The story included interviews with Deirdre Olynick, Patrick Naulleau, and Paul Ashby.

An August 14 Fox News story featured research on microscopic particles brought back from space and mentioned the Advanced Light Source and Andrew Westphal. Daily Galaxy, Space.com, the Business Standard, California magazine and others ran similar stories.

An August 14 Sacramento Bee opinion piece on efforts to study the brain was co-authored by Lab Director Paul Alivisatos.

An August 14 Huffington Post story on air quality in India quoted the Lab’s Joshua Apte.

An August 13 Newsweek story highlighted new research on fracking led by the Lab’s William Stringfellow. His work was widely covered by Popular Mechanics, Salon and R&D magazine among others.

An August 13 ExecutiveGov.com story noted Bill Tschudi’s efforts to help data centers go green.

An August 13 San Jose Mercury News story profiled the Lab’s Howdy Goudey and Robin Mitchell.

An August 12 CBS News story featured research led by the Lab’s Paul Williams showing too much exercise may be harmful after a heart attack. Numerous other news outlets including the London Telegraph, Time magazine, New York Daily News, Huffington Post, KIRO-TV and KOVR-TV, Medscape, China’s Xinhua News and the Toronto Globe and Mail, also covered his work.

An August 12 Eco-Business Q&A with the Lab’s Steve Selkowitz looked at efforts towards a zero-energy future.

An August 12 story in The Guardian on challenges in efforts to switch to renewables quoted the Lab’s Chuck Goldman.

An August 11 Inc.com story on a new chip by IBM quoted the Lab’s Horst Simon.

An August 7 New York Times story on a new IBM computer chip designed to work like a human brain quoted the Lab’s Horst Simon. The Wall Street Journal, Cnet and Forbes were among many others who quoted Simon in similar stories.
