Berkeley Lab In the News, Week of July 20, 2014

A July 24 GigaOm story highlighted a new innovative effort called “M37” to be led by the Lab’s Ilan Gur.

A July 24 R&D story featured research into repairing tendons led by the Lab’s Richard Schwarz.

A July 23 editorial in the Rapid City Journal noted the Lab’s role in the upcoming search for dark matter using the LUX-ZEPLIN, and mentioning the Lab’s Kevin Lesko.

And a July 22 Daily Cal story noted the Lab’s role in leading the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment and quoted the Lab’s Murdock Gilchriese. Engineering also covered the story. 

A July 22 Daily Cal story covered the annual arrival of goats to the Lab for fire protection and quoted Tom Price.

A July 21 story in The Engineer looked at work led by the Lab’s Xiang Zhang, who developed a new method to detect chemical explosives. The Economic Times also covered his research.

A July 21 Daily Fusion story featured work that may lead to better solar cells led by the Lab’s Steven Louie and Jeff Neaton. AzNano and R&D magazine also covered their work.

A July 20 San Francisco Chronicle story on the California drought quoted the Lab’s Jeff  Greenblatt.

A July 20 Daily Cal story noted the passing of the Lab’s Heino Nitsche.

A July 18 San Francisco Business Times story looked at startups moving to be near the Lab’s proposed Richmond Bay Campus.

A July 17 EE Times story featured work on improvements to photoresist led by the Lab’s Paul Ashby, Patrick Naulleau and Deirdre Olynick. Laser Focus World and HPCWire ran similar stories.

A July 17 Boston Globe magazine story on value added to homes with PV systems quoted the Lab’s Ben Hoen.

A July 16 story on The Daily Galaxy on efforts to map the night sky quoted the Lab’s David Schlegel.

A July 16 GreenBiz.com story on nanogrids quoted the Lab’s Bruce Nordman.

A July 15 Rapid City Journal story covered the announcement of the next-generation of dark matter experiments and quoted the Lab’s Kevin Lesko. He was also quoted in a Black Hills Pioneer story.

A July 15 Solar Industry magazine story on integrating photo voltaic systems into utilities quoted the Lab’s Andrew Mills.

A July 13 Contra Costa Times story noted that the Lab received three R&D100 awards this year.

A July 11 KNTV-TV NBC Bay Area story featured the opening of the Lab’s FLEXLAB facility. Daily Fusion, World Journal and GreenBuildingElements.com also covered the opening.

Berkeley Lab In the News, Week of July 7, 2014


Berkeley Lab “In the News” is our weekly review of Lab researchers, staff, and students who have appeared in the news media this past week. This is but a sampling of our coverage. Please note that some links may expire after time.

The opening of the Lab’s FLEXLAB received significant coverage including in the San Francisco Chronicle, San Jose Mercury News, KGO-TV, KCBS radio, the San Francisco Business Times and many others. Outlets attending the press event yesterday included the Associated Press, KGO-TV Channel 7 ABC, KNTV-TV Channel 11 NBC, KGO-AM, KCBS-AM, KQED-FM, World Journal, San Francisco Business Times, Daily Cal, and EE News. Many stories quoted the Lab’s Cindy Regnier, Steve Selkowitz and Lab Director Paul Alivisatos.

R&D Magazine has named this year’s R&D100 winners, which include three from the Lab.

A July 10 Smart Grid News story on nanogrids quoted the Lab’s Bruce Nordman.

A July 10 RedOrbit story featured new insights into photosynthesis led by the Lab’s Vittal  Yachandra.
