Berkeley Lab In the News, May 25 to June 1, 2014

Berkeley Lab “In the News” is our weekly review of Lab researchers, staff, and students who have appeared in the news media this past week. This is but a sampling of our coverage. Please note that some links may expire after time.

A June 5 Nature World News story featured research on black holes, work supported by the Lab’s Alexander Tchekhovskoy. RedOrbit, Fars News, Astronomy, and Universe Today were some of the other outlets that covered the research.

A June 5 Science 2.0 story highlighted new insights into breast cancer, work led by the Lab's Mark LaBarge. R&D magazine also ran a story on the work.

A June 4 IEEE Spectrum story highlighted work on a 2-D transistor developed by the Lab’s Ali Javey. GizModo, R&D magazine and the Voice Of America were some of the other outlets covering the research.

A June 4 Denver Post story on a report of the low costs of renewables quoted report co-author, Galen Barbose., Politico, and Grist also covered the report.

A June 3 KQED QUEST story featured Lab research looking at how to use tobacco leaves to create a biofuel and quoted the Lab’s Bill Shelander.

A June 2 EE News story on California’s efforts towards being a leader in battery storage quoted the Lab’s Venkat Srinivasan.

A May 31 story looked at Lab-led collaborative work towards green buildings and quoted the Lab’s Nan Zhou.

A May 30 Materials Today story looked at work on semiconducting nanocrystals led by the Lab’s Danylo Zherebetskyy.

In May posted a video conversation with Lab Director Paul Alivisatos where he discussed his research and ongoing efforts at the Lab.

A May 30 Symmetry magazine story on a new detector installed into ATLAS at the LHC noted the Lab’s involvement and quoted Karolos Potamianos. An accompanying video also included Potamianos as well as the Lab’s Neal Hartman.

A May 30 Data Center Knowledge story on efforts to improve data center efficiency quoted the Lab’s Bill Tschudi.

A May 30 India West story covered research led by the Lab’s Anand Gopal, Samveg Saxena, and Amol Phadke showing the benefits of hybrid cars in India and China.

A May 30 story on potential fire dangers in the Berkeley hills quoted the Lab’s Al Benitez.

A May 29 story featured new research by the Lab towards smaller accelerators and quoted Wim Leemans. Space Daily also covered the effort.

A May 28 Smithsonian story covered work by the Lab’s Arman Shehabi showing streaming a movie takes less energy than watching one on DVD. Wired, Daily Fusion, The Hindu and many others covered his research.

A May 27 Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology News story looked at work by the Lab’s Natalia Ivanova and Eddy Rubin showing new insights into how microbes read genetic code. Nature and The Scientist also covered their findings.

A May 27 PBS NOVA story on gravitational waves quoted the Lab’s Julian Borrill.
