Berkeley Lab In the News, Week of November 17, 2013


Berkeley Lab “In the News” is our weekly review of Lab researchers, staff, and students who have appeared in the news media this past week. This is but a sampling of our coverage. Please note that some links may expire after time.

The December issue of Scientific American includes a cover story on a materials database and was co-written by the Lab’s Kristin Persson, who touched on the Lab’s effort in the field.

A Nov. 21 UPI News story noted achievements by the IceCube collaboration and quoted the Lab’s Spencer Klein. Sci-News, Science Codex and R&D Magazine also quoted Klein in similar stories.

A Nov. 20 PC World story looked at the release of the world’s Top500 computer list, led by the Lab’s Horst Simon and Erich Strohmaier, both quoted in the story. EE Times, Wired, Linux.com, Computer World, Infoworld and many others also covered the list.

A Nov. 20 SF Weekly story on the Lab’s Carl Haber looked at his work in audio restoration and his recent MacArthur Prize.

A Nov. 20 RedOrbit.com story highlighted research on Lithium-Sulfur batteries by the Lab’s Elton Cairns. CleanTechnica, Daily Fusion and Spain’s Motor Pasion Futuro were some of the others that covered his work.

A Nov. 19 China Daily story on that country’s renewable energy needs quoted the Lab’s He Gang.

A Nov. 18 Marin Pacific Sun story on California’s greenhouse gas emissions cited recent work by the Lab’s Jeff Greenblatt.

A Nov. 18 Huffington Post story on India’s future energy needs included a Q&A with the Lab’s Anand Gopal.

A Nov. 18 NIH Research Matters story highlighted work by the Lab’s Axel Visel showing what leads to the creation of our facial features.

A Nov. 17 Technology Review story on high-capacity batteries quoted the Lab’s
Yuegang Zhang.

A Nov. 16 Automotive News story on recent Tesla auto fires quoted the Lab’s Venkat Srinivasan. Italy’s IB Times ran a similar story quoting Srinivasan.

A Nov. 15 Wired story on an effort to use cellphone chips to create a supercomputer quoted the Lab’s Horst Simon.

A Nov. 14 NPR All Things Considered story on the drive for cheaper and more powerful batteries quoted the Lab’s Venkat Srinivasan.

A Nov. 14 Daily Fusion story featured research on a new microbe that may benefit biofuel research and quoted the Lab’s Blake Simmons. RedOrbit and others also covered the work.

A Nov. 14 Science World Report story covered work on carbon nanotubes led by the Lab’s Feng Wang. RedOrbit.com also covered the research.

A Nov. 13 San Francisco Chronicle story featured work on an effort to turn human waste into compost led by the Lab’s Gary Andersen.

A Nov. 13 Wall Street Journal opinion piece commented on California’s energy policies in light of a new report by the Lab’s Jeff Greenblatt.

A Nov. 12 Black Hills Pioneer story on the search for dark matter and dark energy quoted the Lab’s Kevin Lesko.

A Nov. 11 BoingBoing.net story featured the discovery of a film by Claude Lyneis showing early work at Berkeley Lab.

A Nov. 8 story in The Guardian looked at micro-insurance and climate change and quoted the Lab’s Evan Mills.

A Nov. 7 Nature story on the possible polonium poisoning of Yasser Arafat quoted the Lab’s Kai Vetter. Scientific American also ran the story quoting Vetter.

A Nov. 7 Fierce Government.com story covered a Congressional hearing on scientific funding and included testimony from the Lab’s Saul Perlmutter.

A Nov. 6 Los Angeles Times story highlighted work led by the Lab’s Brett Singer and Jennifer Logue showing hazards of indoor cooking. KCBS-TV Channel 2 and KNX-AM in Los Angeles, KPIX-TV Channel 5 in San Francisco and the Chicago Tribune were among others covering their work.

A Nov. 6 Science360 story featured work on diamond defects led by the Lab’s Graham Fleming. Materials Today also covered the work.

And a Nov. 5 Los Angeles Times story highlighted a new report led by the Lab’s Jeff Greenblatt showing challenges in meeting California’s 2050 greenhouse gas goals. The study was widely covered including by the San Francisco Chronicle, Sacramento Bee, KQED, KPBS, Quartz.com, and KPCC-FM and KCRW-FM in Los Angeles.

A Nov. 5 Huffington Post story on a conference on climate change included the Lab’s Bill Collins.

A Nov. 1 KQED-FM story highlighted battery research led by the Lab’s Venkat Srinivasan.

An Oct. 31 EE News story highlighted research led by the Lab’s Jennifer Logue showing the benefits of sealing leaky homes. EarthTechling and the Sydney Morning Herald also covered her work.

An Oct. 31 Fierce Government story quoted the Lab’s Horst Simon from his appearance in front of a congressional subcommittee this week.

An Oct. 31 ZD Net story on liquid cooled data centers quoted the Lab’s Henry Coles. Data Center Knowledge.com ran a similar story with Coles.

An Oct. 30 NBC News story on first results from the LUX detector quoted the Lab’s Saul Perlmutter. The Christian Science Monitor, Space.com, Live Science and many others ran similar stories.

An Oct. 30 R&D magazine story featured work on a “molecular velcro” led by the Lab’s Ron Zuckermann and Gloria Olivier.

An Oct. 28 episode of KQED-FM’s Forum program included an interview with the Lab’s Carl Haber and his work on audio restoration.

An Oct. 28 PBS News Hour story featured work led by the Lab’s Axel Visel and Catia Attanasio showing what leads to the creation of our facial features. The work was also covered by BBC News, Live Science, The Scientist, South China Morning Post, New Scientist, NBC News, Voice of America, the London Independent and many others.

An Oct. 27 KGO-TV Channel 7 story profiled the Lab’s Jay Keasling.

An Oct. 27 San Jose Mercury News story on our changing sense of time quoted the Lab’s Birgitta Bernhardt. The story also ran in the Contra Costa Times, Oakland Tribune and dozens of other news outlets.
