Berkeley Lab “In the News” is our weekly review of Lab researchers, staff, and students who have appeared in the news media this past week. This is but a sampling of our coverage. Please note that some links may expire after time.
 
A July 18 BBC News video highlighted the work being done at the Lab’s Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis and included interviews with Joel Ager and Frances Houle.

A July 17 PBS News Hour story featured efforts led by Tanja Woyke and Chris Rinke at the Joint Genome Institute to explore “microbial dark matter.” Nature, Scientific American, the French Tribune, The Scientist, Science magazine, Huffington Post, the BBC, and Canadian Broadcasting where some of the many other news outlets covering their work.

A July 16 National Geographic story on California’s energy use cited recent work by the Lab.

A July 14 Economic Times story featured a new magnet planned for the Large Hadron Collider and quoted the Lab’s GianLuca Sabbi. The International Business Times and Daily Cal also covered the effort.

A July 14 Daily Cal story featured work led by the Lab’s Robert Ritchie showing how a lack of vitamin D might lead to the aging of bones.

A July 13 The Motley Fool story on Boeing’s Dreamliner aircraft quoted the Lab’s Elton Cairns.

Berkeley Lab In the News, Week of July 7, 2013


Berkeley Lab “In the News” is our weekly review of Lab researchers, staff, and students who have appeared in the news media this past week. This is but a sampling of our coverage. Please note that some links may expire after time.

A July 12 Live Science story featured a new magnet planned for the Large Hadron Collider. The story quoted the Lab’s GianLuca Sabbi, who helped design the magnet. Symmetry magazine ran a similar story.

A July 11 San Jose Mercury News story on geothermal seismic activity quoted the Lab’s Ernest Majer.

A July 11 RedOrbit story featured work led by the Lab’s Robert Ritchie showing how a lack of vitamin D might lead to the aging of bones. ANI News, Examiner.com, Zee News and the Cambodian Times covered the work.

A July 10 Daily Cal story noted that the Lab received a record eight R&D 100 awards this year and quoted the Lab’s Horst Simon and Chin Guok, and highlighted winners Gao Liu and Delia Milliron. R&D magazine and HPC Wire were some of the others that covered the news.

A July 10 Oakland Tribune story on efficiencies brought by moving some computing to the cloud quoted the Lab’s Lavanya Ramakrishnan and Jon Bashor.

A July 10 Nature story on the limits of electron microscopy quoted the Lab’s Uli Dahmen. GizModo.com ran a similar story.

A July 10 Public Radio International story on rare earth elements in Alaska quoted the Lab’s David Shuh.

A July 9 San Francisco Business Times story featured Lab startup TeselaGen.

A July 9 story in Brazil’s Science Today looked at the IceCube project and quoted the Lab’s Spencer Klein.

A July 7 WWJ-AM Detroit radio story featured the Lab’s thirdhand smoke research and interviewed Lara Gundel.

A July 7 story in London’s The Guardian profiled the Lab’s Saul Perlmutter.

Berkeley Lab In the News, June 23-July 5, 2013

A July 4 Daily Cal story looked at the latest developments in the Lab’s planned Richmond Bay Campus and quoted the Lab’s Glenn Kubiak. Similar stories ran on KTVU-TV Channel 2 and the Contra Costa Times, which quoted the Lab’s Horst Simon.

The July issue of Physics Today includes a feature on the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis and quotes Heinz Frei.

A June 27 GigaOm story featured the development of a new microscope at the Lab led by Kenneth Goldberg.

A June 27 New Scientist story on renewable energies quoted the Lab’s David Fridley.

A June 24 China People’s Daily story looked at work led by the Lab’s Bo Hang showing the dangers of thirdhand smoke. Fox News, China News, the Huffington Post, SKN Vibes, Inside Costa Rica, ZipTrials and Men’s Health magazine also covered the work, with several also quoting the Lab’s Lara Gundel.

A June 24 Men’s Health magazine cited work led by the Lab’s Paul Williams showing how running can reduce osteoarthritis.

A June 21 KPIX-TV Channel 5 story on potential dangers from energy efficient windows quoted the Lab’s Robert Hart.
