A Jan. 24 Discovery News story on the future of batteries quoted the Lab’s Venkat Srinivasan.

Recent issues with batteries on the Boeing 787 led to several interviews with the Lab’s Vince Battaglia, who was quoted in an Associated Press story—which appeared in dozens of news outlets—as well as in an interview on National Public Radio.

A Jan. 23 KRON-TV Channel 4 story gave an update on the Lab’s McMillan Road slide.

A Jan. 22 Global Post story on global warming quoted the Lab’s Kristie Boering.

The January issue of Home Energy Magazine includes an editorial by the Lab’s Alan Meier focusing on blackouts.

A Jan. 19 KNEW-AM radio interview with the head of the East Bay Economic Development Alliance looked at the promise of the proposed Richmond Bay Campus. The segment begins at the 10:15 mark.

A Jan. 18 Science magazine story on the promise of nanowire solar cells quoted Lab Director Paul Alivisatos and cited work by the Lab’s Xiang Zhang

A Jan. 18 R&D magazine story noted a new report on energy efficiency programs led by the Lab’s Galen Barbose and Chuck Goldman. ScienceDaily also ran the story.

A Jan. 17 Seattle Times story on battery troubles with the Boeing 787 quoted the Lab’s Vince Battaglia. Similar stories ran in the San Jose Mercury News and Chicago Tribune. KTVU-TV Channel 2 ran a story quoting the Lab’s Tom Richardson.

A Jan. 17 SciCasts.com story featured work led by the Lab’s Eva Nogales showing new complexity in organisms.

A Jan. 16 KurzweilAI story featured research led by the Lab’s Haimei Zheng which used electron beams to manipulate nanoparticles.

A Jan. 15 Richmond Confidential story looked ahead to the environmental review process for the Lab’s proposed Richmond Bay Campus and quoted the Lab’s Sam Chapman.

A Jan. 15 Denver Post story on the costs of renewable energy quoted the Lab’s Galen Barbose.

The recent hillside slide at the lab generated numerous news stories, including Berkeleyside.com, KCBS-AM radio, KRON-TV Channel 4, KPIX-TV Channel 5 and KNTV-TV Channel 11. Quoted in several stories were the Lab’s Weyland Wong and Gene Tucker.

A Jan. 14 MarketWatch story on how certain aspects of an office can be bad for your health cited Lab research.

A Jan. 14 San Francisco Chronicle story looked at new work on biofuels led by the Lab’s Harvey Blanch and Douglas Clark.

A Jan. 13 front-page San Francisco Chronicle story featured the Labs’ Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis. The story included a link to a video as well as a profile of JCAP director, Heinz Frei.

A Jan. 13 San Francisco Chronicle story on the reliability of electric companies quoted the Lab’s Joe Eto. A second story related to the piece also quoted Eto and cited Lab research.

An upcoming ScienceNews magazine story features breast cancer work led by the Lab’s Gautham Venugopalan and Daniel Fletcher. The story also quotes Mark LaBarge.

A Jan. 10 R&D magazine story highlighted the finding of the farthest supernova yet and quoted the Lab’s David Rubin and Saul Perlmutter. Astronomy and Space Daily were among other outlets that also reported the finding.

A Jan. 10 Gizmag story featured work led by the Lab’s Andy Wyrobek on a blood test to quickly identify radiation victims.

A Jan. 10 Tech Brief story highlighted new ways to study permafrost soil led by the Lab’s Susan Hubbard.

A Jan. 9 Earth Techling story on energy efficiency cited Lab research into more efficient windows.

A Jan. 8 Daily Tech story covered research at the Advanced Light Source and a new effort to improve solar cell efficiency.

A Jan. 7 HPC Wire story noted the Lab’s efforts to expand exascale computing and quoted the Lab’s Kathy Yelick.

A Jan. 7 Philadelphia Inquirer story on one man’s efforts to reduce his home energy bill quoted the Lab’s Phil Coleman.

The January issue of Cancer Discovery includes a Q&A with the Lab’s Mina Bissell.

Berkeley Lab In the News, Dec. 20, 2012-Jan. 4, 2013


Berkeley Lab “In the News” is our weekly review of Lab researchers, staff, and students who have appeared in the news media this past week. This is but a sampling of our coverage. Please note that some links may expire after time.

The latest issue of Home Energy Magazine includes a story written by the Lab’s David Bailey, who retrofitted his home with energy efficient lighting.

A Jan. 3 Science magazine story profiled the Lab’s Peter Nugent and a team’s discovery of a supernova.

A Jan. 2 Investor’s Business Daily story noted Lab research to create a quick test for radiation.

The New Year always brings lists of “Top Science” stories and many included Berkeley Lab-related projects. Scientific American magazine’s list actually looks ahead to what might be big scientific achievements for 2013, including particle-seeking efforts of the Berkeley Lab-led Sanford Underground Research Laboratory.

Science magazine’s top science stories of 2012 included results from the Daya Bay neutrino project, and included a video explanation featuring Lab photographs.

RedOrbit’s top list included the BOSS project led by the Lab’s David Schlegel (The Dark Universe Comes to Light).

And, io9’s list of biggest scientific breakthroughs included work by the Lab’s Seung-Wuk Lee (A Virus that creates Electricity).

A Dec. 28 Daily Galaxy story featured an “anti-matter supernova,” found with help from Lab researchers.

A Dec. 26 Huffington Post story noted the groundbreaking for the FLEXLAB as well as research by Robert Ritchie testing the strength of ceramics.

A Dec. 26 Technology Review story featured Lab research showing why solar installation costs are more in the U.S. than Germany and quoted the Lab’s Ryan Wiser.

A Dec. 24 Daily Cal story featured breast cancer research by the Lab’s Daniel Fletcher and Mina Bissell.

A Dec. 23 San Francisco Chronicle story on the dangers of electrical fires quoted the Lab’s Joe Eto.

A Dec. 21 UPI news story noted the awarding of the National Medal of Technology and Innovation to the Lab’s Art Rosenfeld. The San Francisco Chronicle, Associated Press, and many other outlets also covered the announcement.

A Dec. 21 ThomasNetNews story featured smart windows research led by the Lab’s Delia Milliron (Smart Windows Choose What Light to Let In). 

A Dec. 20 India West story on the battery company, Seeo, noted its Lab partnership.
