Berkeley Lab In the News, Week of September 29, 2013

Berkeley Lab “In the News” is our weekly review of Lab researchers, staff, and students who have appeared in the news media this past week. This is but a sampling of our coverage. Please note that some links may expire after time.

The announcement of a new Kavli Institute to be led by the Lab’s Paul Alivisatos was covered by the San Francisco Business Times, R&D Magazine, Nanowerk, and GlobalEnergyWorld, among others.

An Oct. 4 EE News story on using supercomputers to model climate change quoted the Lab’s Michael Wehner and David Donofrio. Wehner also appears in a similar story in Chemical & Engineering News.

An Oct. 3 R&D magazine story featured work on a 3D dynamic imaging technique for soft materials led by the Lab’s Alex Zettl and Paul Alivisatos.

An Oct. 3 HPC Wire story quoted the Lab’s Erich Strohmaier on the evolution of the Top 500 fastest supercomputer list he helped create.

An Oct. 3 story in The Guardian looked at work leading to the discovery of Seaborgium. A video included interviews with the Lab’s Darleane Hoffman and Alex Pines.

The latest issue of ENR Magazine includes a cover story, plus several sidebar stories, on the new FLEXLAB. (Subscription required) Architectural Record also ran one of the stories.

An Oct. 2 Daily Cal story on the government shutdown noted the possible impact to the Lab.

An Oct. 2 Contra Costa Times story covered an appearance by the Lab’s Glenn Kubiak at the Richmond City Council for an update on the proposed second campus.

The October issue of American Scientist magazine includes a story on global energy supplies and quotes the Lab’s Michael McNeil and Virginie Letschert.

An Oct. 1 Smithsonian magazine story highlighted a collaboration between the Lab’s George Smoot and former Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart.

An Oct. 1 HPC Wire story looked at supercomputing and efforts to create cleaner combustion. The story cited work by the Lab’s Robert Cheng.

An Oct. 1 story on Oregon Public Broadcasting looked at the heat island effect and quoted the Lab’s Ben Mandel.

A Sept. 25 E&E News story highlighted an energy service company industry report led by the Lab’s Elizabeth Stuart.

A recent Materials World story looked at the use of nanocrystals for hydrogen fuel use and quoted the Lab’s Jeff Urban.

A recent Science magazine story on the creation of a climate model quoted the Lab’s Inez Fung.

Another recent Science magazine story looked at future projects for cosmologists and particle physicists and quoted the Lab’s Beate Heinemann and Saul Perlmutter.
