Berkeley Lab In the News, Week of October 20, 2013

Berkeley Lab “In the News” is our weekly review of Lab researchers, staff, and students who have appeared in the news media this past week. This is but a sampling of our coverage. Please note that some links may expire after time.

An Oct. 25 UPI News story looked at work by the Lab’s Robert Ritchie showing the basis for a particular fish’s piranha-proof scales.

An Oct. 25 Dewsbury Reporter story profiled the Lab’s Ian Hinchliffe and his work with the Large Hadron Collider.

An Oct. 24 Travel Channel story looked at one of the first hacking arrests with the help of former employee, Cliff Stoll.

An Oct. 23 BBC News story featured work led by the Lab’s Axel Visel and Catia Attanasio showing what leads to the creation of our facial features. The Guardian, Philadelphia Inquirer, SciCasts, GenomeWeb, TruthDive, French Tribune, the Business Standard and many others also covered their work.

An Oct. 23 Scientific American post highlighted work led by the Lab’s Jennifer Logue showing the benefits of sealing leaky homes. The work was widely covered by Reuters, Green Building Advisor, Benzinga, and many others.

A recent October Climatewire story featured work on biofuels being conducted at JBEI and the Advanced Biofuels Process Demonstration Unit. Blake Simmons, Jian Shi, Dominique Loque and Julio Baez were all quoted.

An Oct. 23 Scientific American story on the search for matter and antimatter quoted the Lab’s Alan Poon. The story originally ran in Quanta.

An Oct. 23 Science Daily story featured work led by the Lab’s Greg Hura and John Tainer, who found new ways to observe DNA repair protein in action.

An Oct. 22 San Francisco Business Journal story noted new efforts to track forest fires using satellites with participation from the Lab’s Carl Pennypacker. Pennypacker also appeared on a KPIX-TV Channel 5 story on the project. IEEE Spectrum and Science Recorder also covered the effort.

An Oct. 22 Technology Review story on a bioengineer quoted the Lab’s Seung-Wuk Lee.

An Oct. 22 USA Today story on Craig Venter quoted the Lab’s Adam Arkin.

An Oct. 21 Contra Costa Times story on how people were dealing with the BART strike quoted the Lab’s Melissa Summers.

An Oct. 20 Business Standard story on energy efficiency efforts in India cited recent Lab research.
