Berkeley Lab In the News, Week of May 5, 2013


Berkeley Lab “In the News” is our weekly review of Lab researchers, staff, and students who have appeared in the news media this past week. This is but a sampling of our coverage. Please note that some links may expire after time.

The May 10 episode of NPR’s Science Friday included an interview with the Lab’s Saul Perlmutter.

A May 9 story in The Atlantic featured work by the Lab’s James Sethian and Robert Saye into mathematically predicting the behavior of bubbles. New Scientist, Scientific American, and Live Science were but some of the many others that also featured their work.

A May 10 MSN News story covered the recent finding of moon dust once studied by the Lab’s Melvin Calvin. Popular Science also covered the finding.

A May 8 GigaOm story highlighted an announcement of a new battery collaboration with the Lab and quoted Venkat Srinivasan. The Silicon Valley Business Journal (which also quoted the Lab’s Doug Davenport) and Fierce Smart Grid also covered the announcement.

A May 8 Smart Grid News story on super-efficient air conditioners quoted the Lab’s Nihar Shah and Amol Phadke.

A recent Scientific American slide show created by the Lab’s Michael Barnett and Paul Schaffner looked at the link between art and the Large Hadron Collider.

A May 6 Live Science story highlighted research led by the Lab’s Charles Koven showing how boreal forests may change location as earth temperatures rise. Mother Nature Network, RedOrbit, and several other news outlets also covered his work.

A May 6 Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News story noted that the JGI partnered with next-generation sequencing platform provider Pacific Bioscience for new genome assembly strategy.
