Berkeley Lab In the News, Week of December 16, 2012


Berkeley Lab “In the News” is our weekly review of Lab researchers, staff, and students who have appeared in the news media this past week. This is but a sampling of our coverage. Please note that some links may expire after time.

A Dec. 21 Contra Costa Times story featured a recent talk by Lab Director Paul Alivisatos who discussed climate change.

The latest issue of National Geographic magazine includes a story on microbes and cites Lab research. The latest issue also includes a photo of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey and includes a quote with the Lab’s David Schlegel (no link).

A recent Issues Online story on ways to reduce carbon emissions in California was co-written by the Lab’s Jeff Greenblatt.

A Malaysia News story noted the signing of an agreement between Singapore and the Lab to research energy efficient building technologies and quoted the Lab’s Ashok Gadgil. Channel News Asia also covered the agreement.

A Dec. 20 CBS Atlanta story featured research by the Lab’s Daniel Fletcher and Gautham Venugopalan showing new insights into breast cancer. MedGadget, the Huffington Post, Yahoo!News, Fox News, and many other news outlets also covered their work.

A Dec. 17 story in The Engineer covered work on microactuators led by the Lab’s Junqiao Wu. R&D also covered the research.

A Dec. 14 Los Angeles Times story featured work by the Lab’s Evan Mills showing an increased interest in climate change by insurers.  Insurance Networking and the Canadian Underwriters also covered the research.

A Dec. 14 Earth Techling story covered the groundbreaking of the FLEXLAB as well as new work on ceramic composites led by the Lab’s Robert Ritchie.

A Dec. 13 RedOrbit story included a radio interview with the Lab’s David Schlegel who discussed dark energy.

A Dec. 13 Science Daily story featured research led by the Lab’s Bin Chen looking at defects in nanocrystals. PhysOrg.com and R&D also ran stories.

A Dec. 11 KCET.org story cited recent work led by the Lab’s Galen Barbose and Ryan Wiser showing a decline in solar costs.

The opening of the Lab’s new FLEXLAB user facility was covered by KGO-AM, EE News, and the San Francisco Business Times.

A Dec. 11 Vision Systems Design magazine story reported on a recent ARPA-E grant given to the Lab’s Philip Haves for his efforts to generate thermal maps of buildings

A Dec. 10 Live Science story on climate change research included work by the Lab’s Dáithí Stone, showing predictions made two decades ago have held true. The China Daily and other news outlets also covered his findings.

A Dec. 10 IEEE Spectrum on data usage for climate modeling quoted the Lab’s Prabhat.

A Dec. 8 Yahoo!Health story on recent advances in breast cancer research included efforts led by the Lab’s Mark LaBarge.

Car and Driver magazine’s end-of-year list of Most Promising Technologies includes Lab efforts to use Metal-organic Framework Storage materials to store hydrogen for vehicles. (“Not That H2” on the list)

A Dec. 6 CleanTechnica story noted an ARPA-E award to the Lab’s Delia Milliron to create smart windows. A Buildings.com story also noted her recent award along with one given to Philip Haves.

A Dec. 5 Climate Wire story looked at the recent announcement of a battery hub which includes Berkeley Lab. The Lab’s Venkat Srinivasan was quoted, as he was in an earlier EE News story. Similar stories ran on KQED-FM and CleanTechnica.

A Dec. 5 HPC Wire story reported the appointment of the Lab’s John Shalf as NERSC’s CTO.

A Dec. 5 R&D magazine story featured research led by the Lab’s Marc Fischer showing higher than expected concentrations of N2O in California. Fischer also spoke with KQED-FM.

A Dec. 4 Arizona Star story noted new funding for a proposed BigBOSS project involving Berkeley Lab. The Associated Press also covered the announcement.

A Dec. 3 Chemical and Engineering News cover story on making better biofuels quoted the Lab’s Susannah Tringe and Trent Northen.

A Dec. 3 EcoSeed story on solar costs cited recent research by the Lab’s Galen Barbose
