An August 28 U.S. News & World Report story featured work by the Lab’s Andy Wyrobek showing how certain vitamins may improve fertility in older men. LiveScience, the Toronto Globe & Mail, Yahoo! News, and many other publications also covered the research.

An August 27 Huffington Post column looked at research by the Lab’s Evan Mills into the carbon footprint of the marijuana industry.

An August 27 Universe Today story highlighted the discovery of a new species of supernova and quoted the Lab’s Peter Nugent.

Berkeley Lab In the News, Week of August 19, 2012


Berkeley Lab “In the News” is our weekly review of Lab researchers, staff, and students who have appeared in the news media this past week. This is but a sampling of our coverage. Please note that some links may expire after time.

An August 24 Los Angeles Times story covered the recent discovery of a progenitor supernova and quoted the Lab’s Peter Nugent. Nugent was also quoted in stories in Time magazine, Australian Broadcasting, and many other national and international news outlets.

An August 22 Los Angeles Times story on a government system for detecting biological attacks quoted the Lab’s Gary Andersen.

The latest issue of Popular Mechanics magazine includes a story on demand response and quotes the Lab’s Mary Ann Piette.

An August 22 R&D magazine story featured work led by the Lab’s Berend Smit on a new computational method to study the use of metal-organic frameworks for carbon capture.

An August 21 PV Magazine story on automated demand response quoted the Lab’s Sila Kiliccote.

Reports of a mountain lion sighting at the Lab led to news stories on KTVU-TV Channel 2, Berkeleyside.com, local Patch sites and the Daily Cal.

An August 20 Discovery News story featured work led by the Lab’s Seung-Wuk Lee showing how a virus can be used to create electricity.

An August 17 Los Angeles Times story on high-speed financial trading issues quoted the Lab’s David Leinweber. The Chicago Tribune also ran the story.

An August 14 NPR On Point story looked at mega droughts and included an interview with the Lab’s Michael Wehner. Wehner was also quoted in a LiveScience story on climate change.

A recent Big Picture Science segment on Radio Seti included an interview with the Lab’s Felisa Wolfe-Simon in a discussion about possible life on Mars.

An August 14 UPI wire story covered the release of a Lab report on wind power. The Oregonian, Houston Chronicle, TG Daily, Hispanic Business, Business Insider, Ecoseed and many other outlets also covered the report. Several stories quoted the report’s coauthors, Ryan Wiser and Mark Bolinger.

The public release of data from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) was covered by Space.com, Astronomy, Yahoo News, the Examiner, and many other outlets.

An August 8 Scientific American story included a video with the Lab’s Judith Campisi, who talked about senescent cells.

An August 8 National Geographic story on China’s shale gas exploration quoted the Lab’s David Fridley.

An August 8 Science Newsline story highlighted work on magnetic vortices led by the Lab’s Peter Fischer and Mi-Young Im.

An August 5 Scientific American story on soil communities cited work by the Joint Genome Institute.

An August 3 San Francisco Business Times story noted the appointment of Kim Williams as the Lab’s new Chief Financial Officer.

An August 3 Gizmag story featured work by the Lab’s Alex Zettl and Feng Wang showing how solar cells can be produced from any superconductor. Ars Technica and the Daily Cal also covered their work.

The August 3 episode of NPR’s Science Friday included an interview with the Lab’s Richard Muller and a look at his research on climate change. Other stories involving Muller appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Show, the Associated Press, and many other publications.

An August 2 New York Times story on errant financial trading quoted the Lab’s David Leinweber.

On August 1, the Lab’s David Bailey co-wrote a column in the Huffington Post on the importance of algebra.

The August issue of Energy Digital magazine included a story on geothermal energy and quotes the Lab’s Ernie Majer.

A July 31 Daily Cal story on a community meeting about the proposed Richmond Bay Campus quoted the Lab’s Sam Chapman and Graham Fleming.
