A June 29 Australian Broadcasting Corporation story looked at work led by the Lab’s Igor Grigoriev showing how fungi may have influenced the planet’s coal formation. A Scientific American story also covered the research.

A June 28 story in The Register noted a new agreement between Cray and NERSC for a new supercomputer. The story quoted the Lab’s Jeff Broughton and similar stories ran in Inside HPC, Reuters, and many similar news outlets.

A June 27 IEEE Spectrum story highlighted work on 3D optical cavities led by the Lab’s Xiang Zhang.

A June 26 Scientific American story on the use of a virus to generate electricity quoted the Lab’s Ramamoorthy Ramesh.

A June 25 story in The Economic Times on synthetic biology cited work by the Lab’s Jay Keasling at JBEI and quoted the Lab’s Nathan Hillson.

A June 25 U.S. News and World Report story featured JGI researcher Monica Medina and her work on coral reefs.

Berkeley Lab In the News, Week of June 17, 2012

A June 22 Examiner.com story looked at the use of microbes in cleaning up the Deepwater Horizon spill. The story quoted the Lab’s Janet Jansson.  

A June 21 Salon story on the use of injection wells to store waste quoted the Lab’s  Stefan Finsterle and John Apps.

A June 21 Examiner.com story on the link between aging and breast cancer featured research by the Lab’s Mark LaBarge.

A June 20 Computerworld story on the efficiency of top computers quoted the Lab’s Erich Strohmaier. A series of stories on the release of this year’s Top 500 computers named Strohmaier and the Lab’s Horst Simon as co-authors of that annual list.

On June 20 R&D magazine announced its R&D 100 award winners. This year, the Lab received four awards.

A June 19 San Francisco Business Times story noted the release of the Review of Particle Physics and quoted the Lab’s Michael Barnett. Symmetry Magazine ran a similar story.

A June 19 Daily Cal story covered a recent collaboration between the Lab and the city of San Jose to find new clean technologies. The story quoted the Lab’s Doug Davenport.

A June 17 San Francisco Chronicle story highlighted seismic monitoring work led by the Lab’s Valeri Korneev.

A June issue of New Scientist included a story on China’s energy usage and quoted the Lab’s Nan Zhou.

A June 14 EE News story looked at an energy efficiency project involving DOE Secretary Steven Chu and the Lab’s Robert Van Buskirk.

A June 14 HPC Wire story noted the appointment of Greg Bell as head of the Scientific Networking Division.

A June 13 Bloomberg TV story featured the Lab’s Jay Keasling and ongoing work at JBEI.

A June 13 Think Progress story highlighted work led by the Lab’s Christer Jansson to turn tobacco into a biofuel.

A June 12 San Francisco Business Times story on the Human Microbiome Project noted the Lab’s role in the effort and named Janet Jansson, Nikos Kyrpides and Victor Markowitz.

A June 12 Wired story on visualizing Pi looked at work led by the Lab’s David Bailey.

A June 11 New York Times story looked at work by Margaret Torn showing how global warming may release carbons in forest soils.

A June issue of Energy Efficiency & Technology included a story on the new energy standard ISO 50001 and quoted the Lab’s Aimee McKane.

A June 6 New York Times blog story featured work led by the Lab’s Seung-Wuk Lee using a virus to generate electricity.

A June 5 KTVU-TV Channel 2 story looked at battery research being led by the Lab including the formation of a new collaboration called CalCharge. The story quoted the Lab’s Venkat Srinivasan. A story on GigOm.com on lithium-air batteries covered a discussion held at a Lab-led battery conference this week.

A June 5 El Cerrito Patch story on the transit of Venus in front of the Sun quoted the Lab’s Greg Aldering.

A June 4 San Francisco Business Times story noted the arrival of John Elliott as the Lab’s new Chief Sustainability Officer.

A June issue of Physics Today story featured the effort by the Lab’s Ashok Gadgil to create the Darfur stove.

A June 4 ScienceCodex story covered work led by the Lab’s Mark LaBarge showing one explanation for a greater risk for breast cancer in older women. Asia News service and Medical Express were some of the other outlets covering his work.

A June 3 Minneapolis Star-Tribune story on the opening of the Sanford Underground Research Laboratory in South Dakota quoted the Lab’s Kevin Lesko.

Berkeley Lab In the News, Week of May 27, 2012

A May 31 Forbes story on short-lived climate pollutants quoted the Lab’s Marc Fisher. Fischer was also quoted in a May 25 KQED.com Climate Watch story on the importance of greenhouse gases other than CO2.

On May 30, the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota opened up its facility. Berkeley Lab project leader Kevin Lesko was quoted in various news stories as covered by the Associated Press, Fox News, BBC News, Symmetry Magazine, and numerous other news outlets.

A May 29 Scientific American story noted the establishment of CalCharge, a new battery coalition co-led by Berkeley Lab.
