The director of the Sanford Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory at Homestake, Jose Alonso, has announced his retirement, effective Oct. 15. A release from the Lead (LEED)-based lab says Alonso will continue as laboratory director emeritus and consult on science and education programs. Alonso became the lab's first director in October 2007. He brought more than 40 years experience in physics research and managing large experiments to the Sanford Lab post. Alonso had retired in 2002 after more than 30 years at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. More>A story on this topic also appeared in the Rapid City Journal.
